Thanks to everyone who entered the ‘Be the Commissioner for a day’ competition! We received fantastic posters, poems, stories, videos and music from more than 100 kids across NSW who told us what they would do if they were the Commissioner.
Here are some of the things kids talked about:
• listening to young people and taking kids’ ideas seriously
• having more fun things for kids to do and safe places for kids to hang out
• stopping bullying and peer pressure
• looking after the environment and dealing with climate change
• helping kids to be healthy and active
• helping kids who are sick or disadvantaged
• getting rid of homelessness
• supporting parents and families.
We will work on passing these ideas and comments to the people who make decisions about them.
It was very hard to choose only one person to be the Commissioner for a day. This year’s winner is Meg Thompson, aged 11 from Millthorpe in central west NSW.
Meg wrote about bullying and the different ways bullying happens. Meg wrote “Bullying is a very big problem in Australians youth. We need to stop it immediately!”
“Get help if you’re getting bullied. From your parents, friends, adults and teachers.”
The runners up in the 8-12 years category was Jessica and Debbie, both aged 10 from Rosemeadow who sent in their song ‘We can do anything’.
The runner up in the 13-17 years category was Christine, aged 13 from Loreto Kirribilli who wrote about the need for kids to have a place to hang out and have fun, feel safe and be supported.
Stay tuned to hear what Meg gets up to when she is the Commissioner for a day on Universal Children’s Day on Wednesday 28 October!
