The Expert Advisory Committee is established under Section 8 of the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998. The committee meets regularly with the Commissioner to provide assistance and advice.
Members of the group have child-related expertise in areas such as health, education, child protection, child development, the law, employment and sport.
The following people are members of the Expert Advisory Group:
- Mr Andrew Cappie-Wood, former Director-General of NSW Department of Education and Training, for his expertise in education and disability. Mr Cappie-Wood is Chairperson of the Expert Advisory Group
- Mr Jack Beetson, former Executive Director of Tranby Aboriginal College, for his expertise in education
- Mr Peter Homel, Manager, Crime Reduction and Review Program, Australian Institute of Criminology, for his expertise in child development
- Ms Helen L’Orange, former head of national and New South Wales Offices for the Status of Women, for her expertise in child protection
- Ms Emily Booker, Board member of Plan Australia, for her expertise in child development
- Ms Helen Kerr-Roubicek, former Manager of Student Welfare and Student Counselling in the NSW Department of Education and Training, for her expertise in child protection
- Ms Judith Meppem, formerly the first NSW Chief Nursing Officer, for her expertise in health
- Mr Jonathan Nicholas, Director of Programs, Inspire Foundation, for his expertise in health
