Our Vision: Children in NSW are happy and safe in child care.

Child care helps families look after their children.

Child care can play an important role in the lives of children, especially in the early years of their life.

The nature of child care varies widely, from informal care by extended family, neighbours and friends, to formal care by trained professionals in structured settings.

Whatever the setting, child care must be of a high standard and children should be safe and feel happy to be there.

During the early years at child care, children learn about relationships with adults other than their parents; they learn to interact with other children in group settings; and they are provided with a range of learning opportunities.

Affordable, quality child care creates employment and economic opportunities for families by broadening the range of work options available to parents. The aspects of child care looked at on Kids Stats are:

  • Quality
  • Affordability
  • Children’s experience of child care

"It's good because its got lots of stuff and I've got good friends there. You can play in the sandpit and I like playing with balls. I don't like it when I hurt myself." (Boy, 5)
