Notes: Figure based on 6,075 respondents. For this indicator 426 (6.6%) responses were 'not stated' (Don't know or Refused) and excluded from analysis. Socio-economic status based on Socio-Economic Index For Areas classification. The following questions were asked of parents or carers: "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken part in sports with a coach or instructor (except dance or gymnastics)?"; "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken lessons or instruction in other organised physical activities with a coach or instructor, such as dance, gymnastics or martial arts?"; and "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken lessons or instruction in music, art or other non-sport activities?".

Comment

The proportion of children participating in some form of organised activity outside school hours in the past 12 months declined as socio-economic status declined.

There was a difference of 18.0 percentage points between the participation of children in the highest socio-economic group and the lowest socio-economic group.
