Remoteness based on Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia classification. Socio-economic status based on Socio-Economic Index For Areas classification. The following questions were asked of parents or carers: "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken part in sports with a coach or instructor (except dance or gymnastics)?"; "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken lessons or instruction in other organised physical activities with a coach or instructor, such as dance, gymnastics or martial arts?"; and "In the past 12 months, outside of school hours, how often has [child] taken lessons or instruction in music, art or other non-sport activities?".

Comment

Approximately 75% of children participated in some form of organised activity outside school hours in the past 12 months. The proportion participating is lower for children who are:

  • 4 to 7 year olds
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
  • living in remote or very remote areas
  • living in areas of low socio-economic status
