What does this mean?

In Kids Stats feeling safe refers to the feelings of security and protection that children and young people experience in their environment.

Why is it important to monitor?

Children and young people’s sense of safety influences their behaviour, including the activities that they take part in and the places where they spend their time. This can have an effect on their well-being, including their connections to the community and view of the future.

Children and young people’s perception of their safety may vary depending on the setting, time of day and day of week.

Their feelings of safety can also be influenced by:

  • their own personal experiences,
  • what they see happening to others,
  • what they hear from others, such as parents and friends, and
  • what they see and hear in the media.

Indicator

Information on children and young people’s feelings of safety is not routinely collected in NSW. This is an area for future development.
