  • Report into Children and Young People 9-14 Years in NSW
    16 Sep 2009

The final report of the Inquiry into Children and Young People Aged 9-14 Years in NSW, Children and Young People Aged 9-14 Years in NSW: The Missing Middle, was released on 3 September 2009. The inquiry was conducted by the NSW Parliamentary Joint Committee on Children and Young People.

The Commission made a submission to the inquiry in July 2008.

The middle years of childhood have attracted less attention from policy and research than early childhood or adolescence, perhaps because the middle years are perceived as a less dramatic period of development. However, the development and social changes that generally occur in a child’s life between 9-14 years are significant. (p3)

The Committee released a statement on the release of the report on 9 September:

“The Committee is concerned that despite the middle years being a critical time in the development of children and young people, this age group has been largely overlooked in both research and service provision,” said the Committee Chair, Robert Coombs MP.

“The report has identified gaps in services across a range of areas including education, health and welfare, together with a number of promising programs. Of particular interest to the Committee are those programs likely to impact on multiple outcomes for this age group,” commented Mr Coombs.
