  • Commission expert takes children to Parliament for an important meeting
    16 Sep 2008

Visiting Parliament - on the stepsWhen Corey and Harry asked what happens in a meeting, Expert Advisory Committee member Helen L’Orange took them to NSW Parliament to find out.

The Chair of the meeting was Ann Symonds, a former member of the Legislative Council – also known as the Upper House of Parliament.

Ann was the chair of the Social Issues Standing Committee that released a report on Children's Advocacy in 1996. The report recommended the establishment of an Australian Children's Commissioner.

This time, Ann chaired the meeting with Corey, Harry and Helen, and declared the meeting opened at 3:00PM. There was one item on the agenda: what to have for afternoon tea.

Corey suggested a gingerbread man and Harry agreed with her. Corey said it tasted good, and Harry said he liked it.

Helen suggested broccoli because it is good for you. Ann suggested blueberries because they are good for your brain.

Ann asked for a vote by show of hands. Harry and Corey won with two votes.

Ann declared the meeting closed at 3:10PM.

Ann then took Corey, Helen and Harry on a tour of NSW Parliament House.

In the dining room Corey and Harry sat in big brown chairs and ate the gingerbread man until “that was the end of him”.

Tired but happy, Corey and Harry slept all the way home and did not wake up until 5 o’clock.
