Nominations open for young people to be heard
16 Sep 2009
Nominations are now open for the NSW Commission for Children and Young People’s 2010 Young People’s Reference Group (YPRG).
The Group is made up of twelve young people between the ages of twelve and seventeen years from a variety of backgrounds and different parts of the State.
If you want to get involved in making decisions that affect young people, or want your community to have a say, you can make a difference by applying. With all expenses paid and advocacy training, the Young People’s Reference Group is a great way to have a say, be heard, and have fun!
“One of our jobs is to listen to children and young people, to advocate for them and encourage their participation where decisions are made that affect them,” said Gaye Phillips, NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People.
“The young people selected will have a year to have their voices heard and get a chance to influence decisions in NSW.”
The group will meet in Sydney and talk with the Commissioner on ways to make NSW a better place for young people. Past members of the Reference Groups have played an important part in setting the Commission’s directions, influencing what the Commission does, advising on laws before Parliament and helping organisations understand how their work will affect young people.
2009 YPRG member Jemma, 17 years old, said, “The Reference Group is a rare opportunity to get your voice heard, meet knew friends and eat lots of lollies.”
Another member of the group Brittany, 13 years old, said, “It’s a great chance to voice my point of view about the changes I would like to see for kids in NSW and to make an important contribution.”
All young people are welcome to apply. More information and application forms can be found at,
