  • Time for kids to have their say in research about their lives
    09 Jul 2009

A group of top social researchers has put together a new resource to help break down barriers to involving children and young people in research about their lives.

Involving Children and Young People in Research is a compendium of papers that seeks to define and address challenges facing researchers within the broader context of changing attitudes toward the right of children and young people to play an active role in the decisions and actions that shape their lives.

The Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth and the NSW Commission for Children and Young People have partnered to bring together current thinking and evidence from Australian leaders in participatory research.

The result is a valuable new resource that provides insight into the ethical and logistical issues faced by researchers who want to actively involve young people in research that impacts on their lives.

“There are many challenges facing those who want to involve children and young people as active participants in research,” said Gillian Calvert, NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People.

“This resource aims to help researchers meet those challenges by offering practical options for effectively involving children in research so their voices are heard and able to inform research,” Ms Calvert said.

The compendium also provides a starting point for moving towards a research culture that includes the perspective of children and young people.

“The involvement of children in participatory research can provide enormous benefit both to researchers and to the young people who are the intended beneficiaries of research,” said Dr Lance Emerson, ARACY Chief Executive Officer.

“We’re hoping through this body of work to foster a research mindset that moves from conducting research on children to research with children and even by children,” Dr Emerson said.

The publication is available online at kids.nsw.gov.au and aracy.org.au
