Checking the Scoreboard will help you assess how well children and young people's participation is working in your organisation or group.

By using this resource you will be able to get feedback about children and young people’s participation from both staff and children and young people involved with your organisation or group.

This will help you:

  • CHECK how children and young people are involved now
  • REFLECT on what’s working or where participation activities could be improved or expanded
  • ACT to introduce new ideas or bring about change if it’s needed

Checking the Scoreboard is designed to be done as a facilitated exercise so that questions and answers can be discussed in a group setting.

It is made up of four sections – a facilitator’s guide and separate worksheets for staff and children and young people.

Coach’s handbook: this is the facilitator’s guide – it will give you an overview of the resource and how to use it with staff, children and young people.

Running on to the field – questions for starters: this is a worksheet for children and young people who are part of organisations that are starting to think about participation. It is written in language that is suitable for a younger age group.

Getting into the game – questions for players: this is a worksheet for children and young people who are part of organisations that have invested time and energy in participation strategies. It is written in a style that is suitable for older children and young people.

The cheer squad – questions for staff: this is a worksheet for adult members of a group or organisation that wants to assess or improve children and young people’s participation.
