A public discussion paper released by the NSW Commission for Children and Young People highlights the concern that the current major reforms of workplace laws do not fully address the needs of hundreds of thousands of young Australians.

It is important that working children remain protected as workplace reforms continue and the nature of children’s work changes.

The New South Wales Commission for Children and Young People asked Professor Stewart, an expert in industrial relations law, to develop the discussion paper ‘Making the working world work better for kids’ to encourage debate on how best to protect children at work while promoting their well-being.

The paper advises on the aspects of children’s lives that require special protection as they enter the paid workforce, including education, sleep patterns, physical and mental development, recreation, family interaction and general wellbeing. This presents questions about how to best regulate to protect children in each of these areas while ensuring a system that is easy for employers to understand.
