If you are a self employed person aged 18 years or older whose work meets our definition of child-related employment, you need to apply for a certificate to show you do not have a criminal record that makes you a prohibited person.

After 1 May 2010, penalties will apply if you do not have a valid Certificate.

What is child-related employment?

You are in child related-employment when:

  • you work in settings listed in the Commission’s legislation; and
  • your work primarily involves contact with children; and
  • your work involves direct contact with children; and
  • your contact is not directly supervised by a person having the capacity to direct you in the course of your employment – for example the person who has engaged you has the capacity to direct you, but other people around you do not.

If your work as a self-employed person matches all four of these criteria, you should apply for a Certificate for Self-Employed People.

How do I apply?

You need to read the instructions before you apply.

  1. Download an application form.
  2. Make an appointment by telephone with your nearest police station to take in your application to be processed.
  3. Take the unsigned application form with required identification and payment to the police station.
  4. Once your application is approved your Certificate will be forwarded by Australia Post to your nominated address.
